THE ARM AND CROWN
Clan MacQuarrie
This is the first issue of the Clan MacQuarrie newsletter, “The Arm and Crown“.
It is hoped that this letter will be published 4 times a year. It will have all
the clan news, up coming Highland events across the country. A genealogy
research section, a general Q and A about the clan or anything about the
Scottish culture. The news letter will be sent to all members both on line via
e-mail and those that do not have e-mail will receive theirs via regular mail.
Of course this news letter does not replace the MacQuarrie e-mail group list
where your questions can be posted and answered by those on the list.
The purpose of the society is to provide a way to re-forge the link between
MacQuarries and their Highland heritage in Scotland and to connect their links
with their world-wide kinsfolk in the clan. The aims of the Society are
educational and social.
Those born as MacQuarrie or a descendent
there-of or of related names are automatically members of Clan MacQuarrie.
Anyone interested in the clan may join the Clan Society. The Society is designed
for those who are actively interested in their clan heritage and kin.
MacQuarrie Stories
This story is reprinted from ”The Ulva” a clan newsletter printed in June 1980
by Bruce MacQuarrie;
“I don’t know how much is true but certainly some of it is: Among the defeated
Highland army at the Battle of Culloden was a man whose Gaelic name was
Mac-an-Leigh. He had watched his father be killed during the battle and he
himself just barely escaped. Knowing he could not return home without being
arrested, he sought and received refuge among the MacQuarrie clan on Ulva. That
the clan sheltered this man & didn’t betray him may indicate a sympathy for the
lost Stuart cause. As part of his disguise Mac-an-Leigh anglicized his name to
Livingstone. He married and lived in a cave on the south shore of Ulva and he
raised a family. One of the children of this marriage was Neil. Around 1790 the
family moved to Blantyre near Glasgow. Neil married Agnes Hunter and their 2nd
son, David, was born 19 Mar.1813. From 1840 to 1870 David Livingstone became a
world famous explorer and missionary as he traveled back and forth across
central Africa. I have met Livingstone’s on Mull who claim descent from this
family. The family of Donald MacQuarrie of Carrick-fergus, Northern Ireland
claims kinship to David Livingstone through two Fletcher sisters.”

At the time of the printing it was unknown just where these men were transported
to. Transports were not sent to Australia until 1787, so these men could have
been sent to North America, possibly to Georgia or the Carolinas.
Does anyone know where these men ended up?
SHARING
It is hoped that a data base can be maintained that connects to Prince Fergus of
Denmark. There are over 1200 individuals in the data base at this time. This
will be an on going clan project and anyone looking for genealogy information
may contact Frank Fisher in New Hampshire, he is looking for all the branches
and personal trees so at some point everyone will be in the data base you can
send hard copy of your branch to him;
