THE ARM AND CROWN
Clan MacQuarrie

Hello Everyone, how was your summer? Hope all is well with everyone, and that the fall is also going well. Just a quick word on membership and dues, please keep in mind that annual dues are due during the month that you joined. You will see that date on the card so please lets keep the society going and the dues coming in so we can do the things that need to be done in order to get international recognition, from the Lord Lyon in Scotland, that we are the official representatives of the Clan MacQuarrie. One thing that we should set our sights on this coming year is to have as many tents at as many Highland Games as possible. If someone wants to set up a tent at the games near them and everyone has their dues paid up it may be possible for the Clan to help defray the cost in registration at least. But that will remain to be seen as this years events are just about over. So pass the word among family and others that the society needs their membership.
The clan archives has a good start with what history is in print and that can be found on the net. What we need is more personal stories and genealogies, and other documents that you wish to share and be kept for future researchers and clansmen. One thing that comes to mind is copies of newsletters from past societies, I have a few in the archive now, so if anyone has old copies please make a copy and send them along to me for input into the archives and for future items for the current newsletter. You can send material to the following address: Clan MacQuarrie
5 Granite Rd.
Ossipee, NH 03864
I will keep the material until another wishes to take over this task. I maintain the archival material for another branch of my family The Sabin/Sabean Family of North America. In it are not only news clips, but copies of wills, discharge papers, letters from long ago, copies of books that were written by Sabin authors, you name it and I have it. So lets get the MacQuarrie archives built up.

Maine Highland Games:
The clan was represented this year at the Maine Highland Games in Brunswick, Me. We had a great site for our tent, it was right on the waters edge, while waiting for passers by to stop we could watch swimmers, boaters, and when the tide went out clam diggers. We had 5 MacQuarrie families stop by, and they were thrilled that the clan was once again at the games. Yes, I say once again it seems that Jim and Rita MacQuarrie had a tent at these games for many years, this being the 30th. However, they retired to Florida and there has been no tent for about 10-15 years. Some of the old timers there said that they were glad that we were back and told us of Jim and Rita. It was not until late in the day when someone told me that Jim’s son Brian wrote for the Boston Globe that I realized whom this Jim MacQuarrie is. His grandfather was brother to my Great Grandmother

These are just two pics from the Maine games, there are more on the clan web site.

Loon Mt Games
What a great time we had at Loon, we met over a dozen MacQuarries over the three days that the games ran. The weather was perfect and the music outstanding. We had three join the society, so I say welcome to those.
Here is one picture of a kilted MacQ at Loon.

MacQuarrie Stories
C.W. Cayzer & Company / Cayzer, Irvine & Company / Clan Line of Steamers Limited / Clan Line
The Clan Line was founded in 1877 in Liverpool as C. W. Cayzer & Company, trading from the UK to India. The company became Cayzer, Irvine & Company in 1878 when Captain William Irvine joined the firm. In 1881 the Clan Line Association of Steamers was formed and, with an influential Glasgow businessman joining the firm, the company was moved to Glasgow. Clan Line head office was established at 109 Hope Street, Glasgow. New ships were built and managed for the Association by Cayzer Irvine, with Cayzer retaining ownership of the original six Clan ships.

In the same month on the 20th, CLAN MACQUARRIE actually rode over a submarine while zigzagging independently on her way to South Africa. Her Master had spotted what looked like a tiderip traveling slowly northward about six cables ahead. He headed straight for the head of the telltale ripple. Five minutes later, there was a terrific impact under the foremast and the bows of CLAN MACQUARRIE appeared to rise and for ten seconds the whole ship vibrated from whatever was under the hull. Then there were two more severe bumps, one under the deep tank amidships and the other under the mainmast. For ten seconds CLAN MACQUARRIE rode over the submarine and forced her down. The buoyancy of the submarine forced her up and she bumped twice more on the bottom of CLAN MACQUARRIE. The submarine was presumed sunk. After the coal had been worked out of the deep tank it was found that six frames on the Port side and five on the Starboard side had parted from the ship’s side. The damage was quickly repaired in Cape Town.
